Ever since I was in college, I’ve always enjoyed scoping out new brands and trying new products that I believe fit in with my fitness and nutrition goals and, of course, are Strong Girl Approved! The entire protein industry has definitely come a long way in the last couple of years and finally there are some great products that not only are clean and nutritious, but that also taste great! If you have the Strong Girl Guides you know that I’m a big fan of Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate. I get into much more detail about why in the Strong Girl Nutrition Guide, but I definitely got excited when I saw that as the second ingredient (after water) in these delicious Iconic Protein drinks.
- I’ll be honest, these guys caught my eye when I was grocery shopping at Sprouts and I looked up and saw their clean and simple packaging! Check!
- So, I first went for their Cafe au Lait flavor, since I’m a coffee nut and I can always use more caffeine. Check Again!
- After reviewing the ingredient list and nutritional profile, I knew I was sold. Check!
Water is the first and main ingredient, followed by 20 grams of Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate! Yea, I know, right?! I always look at the amount of protein after checking out the ingredients. Then, I look at the ratio of protein to calories. All of their flavors have 20g of protein and only 130 calories! That’s a really great ratio and unheard of a lot of times with on-the-go protein drinks. It’s high protein, low calories and low sugar! The drinks are naturally sweetened with Organic Blue Agave, Monkfruit and Stevia, which is why they only have 3g of sugar. And, honestly, they taste pretty sweet as they are.
Their consistency is great. My experience with water based protein drinks in the past has been that they taste really watered down and get clumpy with the protein inside. But, not with Iconic. The water base makes the drinks light, but they still have a rich flavor and medium texture. There’s chicory root in the drinks, as well, which contribute to the 4g of dietary fiber. Also, they’re low fat at only 2g each, which make for a great on-the-go post workout drink, so that your muscles are able to quickly refuel and rebuild. The only thing I’m not crazy about is the Carrageenan Gum, but I’m assuming it’s in here as a stabilizing agent because the drinks are sold at room temperature and don’t come refrigerated. Personally, in moderation, I think you’re fine.
So, right now the three flavors are, Cafe au Lait, Chocalate Truffle, and Vanilla Bean. I definitely recommend drinking these cold and chilled. My two favorites are cafe au lait and I love anything chocolate, so that was easy. Like I mentioned, even though they are water based, they still have a level of creaminess and texture to them. I like the Vanilla Bean, as well, but it’s slightly too sweet for me. These drinks are not only great after a workout on-the-go, but also a quick breakfast when you’re in a hurry and a sweet, low-cal, nutritious snack when you need a tasty pick-me-up.
From their website, it looks like they are only sold individually at Sprouts right now and online by the case at Amazon where they come out to $3.00 each at a dozen per case. If you shop at Sprouts, definitely give one a try and let me know what you think! 🙂 xo
