When it comes to grooming and getting rid of hair down under, the very thought of it can evoke a variety of different emotions. After all, we do remember Kourtney’s attempt at giving Khloe a bikini wax on national television. Not only did we learn not to entrust our siblings with this intimate and important duty, but also that keeping it clean down there doesn’t have to leave you wishing you never went bare.
When I heard about sugaring, this new hair removal alternative taking Hollywood by storm, I thought I’d do a little investigating for myself. Turns out, the ancient Egyptians were just as concerned about their lady garden as we are today and that this so-called “new” method isn’t actually so new. In fact, it can make us feel just like Cleopatra. Now we just need our Mark Antony.
So what exactly is Sugaring?
Sugaring is the ancient art of hair removal that involves using a paste made of just three ingredients—sugar, water and lime juice! This gooey, honey and taffy-like substance is so natural, it’s edible. Although, let’s not get off topic here and get to why this age-old tradition is so sweet!
1. It’s a Natural Exfoliant
Since it’s made from pure and sometimes organic ingredients, it can be used on all skin types, including those with skin sensitivities and diverse hair textures. The sugar paste is heated into a small soft ball about the size of a golf ball. After it cools off to a lukewarm temperature, it’s applied to the skin against the natural direction of hair growth into the hair follicles. It is then removed gently in the natural direction to avoid breakage and in-grown hairs. Because the paste only adheres to dead skin cells, the skin is left exfoliated and undamaged.
2. It’s Clean
A fresh ball of sugar paste is applied on each client, leaving no room for cross contamination. Additionally, sugar is anti-bacterial and a natural hypoallergenic, while lime juice is a pore astringent. Because the paste is water soluble, you don’t have to worry about being sticky for a day.
3. It’s Effective
With frequent sugaring, hair follicles will weaken, resulting in thinner, finer and slower hair growth over a period of time. Short hair can also be removed as it starts to grow back—perfect for when you have an impromptu outing or special occasion!
At this point, I know you only have one question on your mind, “What about the pain?” Well, I didn’t say it was magic! While we all wish hair removal were pain free, you’re still pulling the hair out from the root! So, the pain will always depend on your pain tolerance.
Ultimately, taking care of your lady parts comes down to personal preference. Whether you choose to groom, trim, shave, wax, sugar, laser or embrace mother nature, I stand right behind ya, sister!
